Mechanical Design Engineer

Purpose of Role
To work as part of the product development team with specific responsibility for mechanical and functional design. The role covers the entire lifecycle of the product from initial concept through design, validation, field trials and release into production.
The successful candidate will be completing design work using 3D CAD, Computational Fluidic Dynamics and Finite Elemental Analysis techniques, working with particular focus on fluidic and thermal performance. As such, for the position of Mechanical Design Engineer candidates should have experience of designing complex assemblies and have practical experience of designing for combined fluidic flow, thermal, shock and vibration considerations.

Key Accountabilities
Understand the requirements, design mechanical elements and lead the development of new fluidic systems
Generate design concepts that deliver an enhanced user experience of the product for the mutual benefit of both user and business
Drive product innovation, integrate company assets, new technologies and design strategy into concept proposals and product development
Take personal responsibility for keeping Xaar up-to-date in matters of mechanical design and design for manufacturing
To be regarded by peers as a specialist whose knowledge can be trusted with a high degree of confidence.

Understands the functionality of the components and ensures that design for manufacture complements their overall function and the function of the product
Takes responsibility for mechanical designs, ensuring they can be manufactured consistently and perform consistently in the field

Qualifications and Experience
Degree or Masters degree 2:1 or above in a recognised engineering discipline e.g. Mechanical / Industrial Design, Material science, Physics
Proven understanding of fundamental manufacturing principles
Understanding of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing including tolerance stack-up analysis
Proven experience of using CFD and FEA methods for flow, stress and thermal characterisation. COMSOL would be an advantage
Prototype and concept manufacture for test purposes
At least 5 years experience on products of similar complexity e.g. precision electro-mechanical, high reliability and industrial environments.
